Testimony of the Pass presented in English on 5 October 2019 at the London Society of the New Lacanian School. Patricia Tassara is a member of the ELP and of the WAP.

Dreams were fundamental in my analysis. They were an effect and key instrument of the transferential unconscious and I used them until the end, let’s say, until the parlêtre could arrive at the real unconscious that marked the end of analysis.

To arrive at this point, it was necessary for the parlêtre to be a believer – to believe in the unconscious knowledge, to believe that the symptom meant something, to believe in the power of words. Let’s say that I believed in the existence of The Virgin, The mother of the maledictive gaze. 1 The necessary lie of this fictional belief covered the void that was found in the end.

The symptom arose with difficulties at the level of the body image, a position of phallic jouissance linked with the gaze that made an obstacle to the feminine. Analysis helped me to traverse the ravage of the maledictive gaze that had left the parlêtre in a position of melancholy.

The transference work from the unconscious interpretation – always searching for the missing meaning – transmuted into the real unconscious towards the central void of language, with the body event. The parlêtre could finally arrive at the limit of interpretation, “the limit to the autistic monologue of jouissance.” 2 With the approach to the feminine position the body event emerged.

I will present a series of dreams that show changes in the position of the subject and its jouissance, showing how the body event emerged when the fantasy – formulated as: The mother crushes the woman – was traversed and the parlêtre encountered the void of S ( ), the true void that Lacan mentions, the void crossed by an infinite line. This is the void whose limit cannot be found, whose depth cannot be plumbed.

Finally, given that we will also be holding a Cartel Study Day in the London Society of the NLS this afternoon, I will finish with a comment about my experience of working in cartels.

An IPA Interpretation

In adolescence, I went to my first consultation with an IPA analyst. In the first session, I drew a family sitting at the table, ready to eat. I could not finish the mother’s face, repeatedly rubbing it out. She was the one that was not happy in the drawing. The analyst highlighted this. In another session I said that I felt “I couldn’t fit in the class.” The analyst asked: What class? I answered: “my school class of girl friends.”

The signifier “class” had an effect. I realised it also meant economic class. As I belonged to a wealthy family, which I supposed to be wealthier than my friends’, I thought that was the reason for my problems. It was the interpretation of the parlêtre but also of the family, which avoided the subjective responsibility for discontent by putting the responsibility on money.
